“The decision by Republican state senators in Indiana to oppose partisan redistricting was a courageous act in the face of immense political pressure. President Donald Trump is sure to unleash the full force of his vitriol against members of his party who opposed his dictates from Washington. These leaders will pay a price in the threats they receive, the voters who turn against them and the general sense of uneasiness that comes from being alienated from former friends and political allies. History, however, will look kindly on their decision as an honorable act by leaders who were unwilling to compromise their principles. If Texas, California, North Carolina and Missouri showed America how quickly fairness can fall to injustice, Indiana reminded the nation that fortitude and honor still exist.
Maryland is in the middle of a similar debate about redistricting. Democratic Governor Wes Moore is inclined to redraw congressional districts in a way that eliminates the state’s last Republican-held seat. With a growing national profile and the competition for attention gearing up for the 2028 presidential primaries, Moore seems to believe that the path to political success is to replicate the worst parts of President Trump’s character. Maryland’s governor is using combative language, and his push for redistricting shows a willingness to seek political advantage by any means.”
