Salisbury council debates election reform, sidesteps cost questions

“City of Salisbury officials weighed a wide range of election reforms Monday — from changing how vacancies are filled to overhauling how votes are cast — but largely sidestepped a central question: how much any of it would cost.



City Council members agreed to move quickly on revising the appointment process for filling council vacancies, a response to the fallout from last year’s abrupt resignation of former Council President D’Shawn Doughty. His departure triggered a contentious appointment that elevated political newcomer Melissa Holland and drew sharp criticism from other declared candidates, who called the process deeply unfair.



Broader changes to Salisbury’s election system, however, were pushed off — with several officials saying voters, not the council, should decide whether to pursue them. The group also avoided questions raised by The Sun earlier this week about why the city’s elections cost more than those in other Eastern Shore jurisdictions and in some similarly sized Maryland municipalities.”
