Appointments or Special Elections? There Is a 3rd Option
Should empty seats be filled by appointments or special elections? We recently held a discussion between elected officials in Maryland which unearthed a poignant debate about this topic. Should people be represented by someone that they didn’t vote for? On the other hand, is the cost and complexity of running a special election worth it? In our discussion, there were good arguments made for and against both sides, but neither was a clear favorite.

Will RCV Actually Change Anything?
We put this question to elected officials in MD and received a wide range of reactions. One thing was clear, though. Citizens, candidates, election officials, poll workers, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike were all struggling with one thing...legitimacy!

About Pete Oliver-Krueger
I serve as Head of Policy and Priorities for the Maryland Forward Party, and my passion is creating opportunities for listening to real people and crafting practical political solutions. Almost since I became eligible to vote I have struggled to fit in with any party. I have always had friends and family members across the political spectrum – Republican, Democratic, and Independent – and each party has made promises that excited me, only to fall short again and again in implementation. My career, first as a product designer and later as a management consultant, has taught me that while individual decisions can seem easy, it is really hard for groups to get anything done. It requires new ways of thinking, special collaboration techniques, and clear coaching to get the most important things across the finish line. I’m with the Forward Party because the people here are willing to think different, think practical, and get real things done.
